YoPA Project: Participatory Innovation for Youth Health Promotion

EU funds international project that empowers adolescents from four global cities to lead community health and well-being interventions.

The YoPA Project (Youth-Centered Participatory Action) is an international initiative funded by the European Union, focused on promoting the health and well-being of young people between the ages of 12 and 18, with special attention to vulnerable populations. Implemented in Aalborg (Denmark), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Osogbo (Nigeria) and Soweto (South Africa), the project adopts a participatory approach that puts adolescents at the center of the process, as co-investigators and leaders of the interventions.

YoPA seeks to reduce health inequalities and combat physical inactivity by encouraging young people to identify local challenges and develop customized solutions that are applicable in their communities. Interventions include inclusive urban design, the creation of public spaces that promote physical activity and the definition of health policies adapted to local needs. At the same time, the project aims to empower young people to become agents of change, promoting sustainable impact and collective well-being.

Lusófona University plays a central role in the scientific and operational development of YoPA. António Palmeira, a specialist in health and physical activity, leads the team as Principal Investigator. Marlene Nunes da Silva, with extensive experience in promoting physical activity and community intervention, acts as Co-Principal Investigator. Célia Maria Silvério Quico, a researcher in participatory media and innovation, contributes to the dissemination and impact of the project. Maria Fernanda Santos Souza, Research Assistant, supports YoPA's scientific and operational activities.

Starting in 2023 and due to end in 2027, the project presents an innovative model for promoting inclusive and effective solutions that strengthen the voice of young people, creating a positive impact both in the cities involved and at a global level.
