ULusófona Article Honored by Biomechanics Magazine Promotes Active and Healthy Aging

The scientific article, which focuses on the biomechanical parameters of gait and the risk of falls in older adults, was recognized by the prestigious international journal Biomechanics.

The research conducted at ULusófona has earned yet another important international recognition. The article titled “Gait Biomechanical Parameters Related to Falls in the Elderly: A Systematic Review” - https://doi.org/10.3390/biomechanics4010011 - conducted as part of the MovLab project - was awarded the prestigious annual Biomechanics Best Paper Award. The work was carried out as part of a doctoral program at ULusófona, under the scientific supervision of Professor João Abrantes, Ph.D. (CICANT and Hei-Lab) and Pedro Aleixo, Ph.D. (CIDEFES).

The award is granted by the scientific committee of the international journal Biomechanics (published by MDPI), based on a comprehensive evaluation that considers the originality, impact, and relevance of the research to the scientific community, as well as the high number of citations and downloads the article has received.

A Vital Contribution to Active and Healthy Aging

The award-winning study consists of an in-depth systematic review of the biomechanical parameters of gait, which are directly related to the risk of falls in the elderly population. Since falls are one of the leading causes of injury and loss of independence in older adults, understanding the biomechanical changes in human movement is crucial for developing more effective prevention and rehabilitation strategies.

As part of the award, the research team receives a cash prize, an official certificate of excellence, and a one-year waiver of publication fees (Article Processing Charges) for submissions to the journal.

The Best Paper Award reinforces the standing of ULusófona and its R&D units, particularly the interdisciplinary work carried out within the framework of MovLab.
